Where can individuals get naloxone?

There are several ways for individuals and their loved ones to access naloxone:

In March 2023, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved naloxone for over-the-counter sales for those without a prescription.

If you have a prescription for naloxone, many health insurance plans will cover all or a portion of the cost. MaineCare will cover the cost of a two-dose nasal naloxone spray kit. Learn more about the MaineCare standing order for naloxone here.

Check your local big box store or talk to your local pharmacist for details.

Naloxone can be obtained from syringe service programs (SSPs) in Maine at no charge. Find your local SSP by clicking the button below.  Call ahead for availability and hours.

Naloxone can be obtained at no charge through one of Maine’s Tier One or Tier Two organizations. Find your local organization here.

The Overdose Prevention Through Intensive Outreach Naloxone and Safety (OPTIONS) initiative is a coordinated effort by the Maine Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) and other state agencies to improve the health of Mainers with substance use disorder. OPTIONS supports treatment, harm reduction, and recovery and aims to reduce the number of fatal and non-fatal drug-related overdoses.
